Actionscript 3 - Play and URL button

IT'S AS SIMPLE AS COPY AND PASTE THE CODE BELOW!

I spent about 4 hours this morning trying to find a code for 2 simple buttons. One to link to another frame, and another to load a URL. I was so used to the AS2 "GotoAndPlay" or "GetURL" commands that AS3 really seems to unnecessarily confusing for the average animator.
No matter how many codes I copy/pasted, I kept getting syntax errors or whatever.
Finally I found ones that work, so to save you all the trouble, here they are.

To link to another frame within the same flash animation:

Semester Break Project!

Hey guys!
Long time no see!
I just want to start this post by saying really quick, I am sorry for the delay on the Fourth Tower Web-Comic release. It was due on the 20th but this week was the last week of semester and I've been bogged down with finishing assignments as well as polishing up a show-reel for our student exhibition.

Ok, that out of the way, I will explain what this post is all about.
As was reinforced by the responses at the expo, I have realized that I am not doing enough
projects in my own time to practice my animation skills as well as delve deeper into my new found love of special effects.
I have a month free before starting TAFE again next semester, and I intend to USE IT!

Problem is, I don't have a team, as in, the most I could get out of my friends is getting them to maybe hold the camera for me, that's about it.

Which pill would you take?

(I dont mean to make taking pills a running theme here, but this is a question I am very curious about.)

Now, I am sure that everyone has seen matrix. Totally awesome film - if you haven't watched it then you must have at least heard what the movie is all about, but regardless, I highly recommend watching it!
The follow up movies are entertaining as far as action goes, though the initial concept and themes of the first movie make that by far the best of the trilogy.

This blog entry is about one of the topics within that movie.

The topic is that of the red and blue pill!

" You take the blue pill - the story ends, you wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe. You take the red pill - you stay in Wonderland and I show you how deep the rabbit-hole goes."             - Matrix, 1999

Memorable Moments: Betrayal

Fiona Mcintosh: Betrayal

"Cloot removed his garments until he stood naked in the sunlight, his strange, deformed body an intrusion in this beautiful place. Tor dared not say a word. Then his friend crouched low to the ground, pulling his head right into his knees and covering as much of himself as he could with his long, hairy arms. The intensity of the sunlight began to increase, at first slowly and then rapidly until Tor could barely make out Cloot's outline. He was terrified as he felt a mighty power descending...

... He yelled Cloot's name against the hum of the magic and closed his eyes against the scintillating colours which clamoured around the diminishing huddle in the centre. Suddenly everything became silent. Tor snapped open his eyes just as a large, majestic falcon lifted effortlessly from the clearing, its wings beating rhythmically and powerfully.
Tor screamed once more, loudly and with despair, as Cloot disappeared from his sight high above the trees."
- Excerpt from Betrayal - Fiona McIntosh.

Last Lantern

The Last Lantern of the forest

 last lantern

Over dry hills
The lions flew,
Hot wind bearing them lift.
With sand in face
And clouded view
The rider held his gift.

Descends the beast
From dunes to trees,
A shrouded forest tall.
Within the haze
Beneath the breeze
Preparing for his fall.

Little Warrior

Another TAFE assignment.
This week we were given the model of the 'little warrior', a helmet with legs.
The requirements were that we make it walk, jump, and interact with a ball in some way.
I thought I would mix it up a little and the video below is my finished result.
I hope you enjoy!

Model, scenery and movements created in 3DS Max,
editing and sounds in Premier Pro.

Forsaken

Forsaken.

Civilians walking,
Their last moments on earth,
Civilians talking,
The day of its birth.
An unknown power
Fabricates inside,
And on its release,
Only he shall decide.

But one is aware,
And within she will seek,
The cure of the night,
From her it shall leak.
Her forces are gathered
Defence is at hand,
Through Hordes of these demons,
Alone she must stand.

Would you take it?

Limitless!
This post is for those who have seen the movie limitless.
I have watched this movie at the cinema twice and thoroughly enjoyed it both times. Not being a drug user myself, I think my attraction to this film came more from the main character and his current position, as he is a writer with writing problems. This instantly hit home with me.

The way he over comes his 'writers block' is not really a way I would consider with any other drug, though I have a feeling that if NZT-48 was available to me then I would most definitely use it and would not stop writing for the entire duration.

Keeper of the Kingdom

- Jonathon Best ©

Keeper of the kingdom,
He watches in wait,
For he only knows
How to cross the last gate.
The horses of thunder,
The staves are held high,
Through thick falling rain
Hear the raw battle cry.

The castle a war ground,
Barricaded in fort,
Archers of loyalty
Defend with retort.
Boulders are blazing,
Catapults sling,
Young princes protecting
Their father and king.

Memorable Moments: The Shadow Over Innsmouth

Memorable moments #01
H.P. Lovecraft. The Shadow Over Innsmouth.

"At length, feeling a fatigue which had nothing of drowsiness in it, I bolted the newly outfitted hall door, turned off the light, and threw myself down on the hard, uneven bed - coat, collar, shoes, and all. In the darkness every faint noise of the night seemed magnified, and a flood of doubly unpleasant thoughts swept over me. I was sorry I had put out the light, yet was too tired to rise and turn it on again. Then, after a long, dreary interval, and prefaced by a fresh creaking of stairs and corridor, there came that soft, damnably unmistakable sound which seemed like a malign fulfillment of all my apprehensions. Without the least shadow of a doubt, the lock of my door was being tried - cautiously, furtively, tentatively - with a key."
- Excerpt from H.P.Lovecraft's The Shadow Over Innsmouth.

Fantastically written and truly horrifying.

Avatar Yourself

I've had that avatar picture sitting at the bottom of my page for ages now, and although I thought it had all been done before, I was surprised at the amount of people still looking for a way to 'avatar' themselves.
Ive found a few screenshots of my progression, and here I will post them with captions to try to help out those still having trouble. I hope you find it informative :)

The Ever Watching Part 2 of 2

(A short story by Jonathon Best©2011)
Part 1 can be viewed here >>> Part 1

Black.
All around me.
My head hurts, and I’m guessing it’s from more than just a fall. Are my eyes open? I don’t even want to know. On the count of three. One... two...
I try my eyes, and a blinding brightness shoots to the back of my skull. Shit!
I lay my head back down and wait for the newfound agony to subside. A few moments pass. I try again, opening them slowly this time. A bright blur, gradually giving way to a few blotches of grey. They grow and sharpen in clarity as I peer around the room. A desk, a cabinet and the end of my bed. The brightness is being emitted by a spotlight directly above my head – The only light in the room, though its power has faded greatly now my eyes are in focus.
I take another sweep of the room.
A Hospital?
Strange, though. Even for a hospital it looks too glum. Looking down at my clothes I find that I’m wearing the same clothes I had on that night. That night at the park with Jerry. A flash crosses my mind as I recall the events of that night. A shiver is rides up my spine and plants itself deep into my neck.
I know exactly where I am, and it sure as hell isn’t a hospital!

The Ever Watching Part 1 of 2

(A short story by Jonathon Best©2011)

Once again I receive a call from my socially insecure friend. You can always tell when it’s him because he speaks as if he has just been asked a confusing question, or as if the ‘telephone’ is still a new ‘thing’ and he is still learning how to use it.
He asks me if I’m busy, because he has had a bad day and wants to talk (complain) about it. Nothing new. I weigh up my options. Do I really need to listen to his bullshit? Or is making an excuse sounding good ‘roundabout now? Not that I’m ever busy, and he knows it. So, like always, I reply with ‘Sure man, just gimme 5 minutes and I will head down.’

He only lives a few houses along. I guess that’s why we see so much of each other. There can’t be many other reasons, really. We never find much to talk about, or rather, we always end up talking about the same thing, more or less; Why society is fucked. Why god is a stupid notion. Why most people don’t see things the same way we do... It’s all the same, and it all lost its intrigue about a year and a half ago. Still, though, we walk most nights, throwing back and forth our rhetorical questions, hitting each other with intelligent quotes or statistics that may change the other persons mind, even though we are usually on the same side anyway. It was all a complete waste of time.

Heading home at night

Something is constantly following me. It cant be seen or caught, it seems to be beyond physical form, but theres that uneasy feeling of a presence thats constantly with me, everywhere I turn.
This poem is about me leaving my local forest area (This is the only hangout for me and my friends within walking distance) and walking home, feeling 'Its' eyes burning into the back of my skull, whatever 'it' may be.
The face you see in the corner of your eye, only to dissapear when you turn, the figures that your trees' shadows twist into, only to turn back to shadows as you divert your gaze.
A short story has been written about this character, and can be viewed here

Boxer Animation

Today is my last day at TAFE until our break and our 3D assignment is due.

The characters were given to us as a practise file, but the animations, sounds, editing and compiling was done by each person individually. At the end of this blog i will link my youtube video of the final result.

The programs used were 3DS Max 2011 and Adobe Premier Pro (With windows movie maker thrown in there at the end to mega-compress the file for the youtube upload.)

This is our own

This is a short recap of our night in the Asylum in story form. I hope you enjoy :)

It was the night after they found the mental asylum that they decided to explore its bordered up remains properly. Josh organised a large group of torch holders and weapon bearers, as the more people with him, the less horrifying the experience.

That first night, Josh and his friends did have a brief look around. The grounds seemed pretty secure, save the odd chimney smashed on the concrete paths, or the scattered metal sheets that had once been covering some of the windows.
The group of three crawled through the perimeter fence, but the only way into the building itself was through a less than inviting window, which had been smashed open by what the group could only assume were previous explorers. Agreeing that they weren’t going to climb through the window that night, they explored around the outsides instead, as many open walkways connected the five buildings.

Dear Mr. Lovecraft...

Whilst some fall into the darkness of the earth with fear and depression, others revel in its intrigue and mystery.
Most walk the path at some stage in their lives and are panicked by their sudden blindness. Briskly beckoned to the world of day by other frightened souls, most turn back immediately into the comforts of pack mentalities and false senses of human worth.
They decorate the truth with attractive lies and enforce laws upon everyone just to feel important and in control over the one thing they know least about; life.
Instincts and impulses are shunned purely so that disgusted people have endless opportunities to shake their lowered heads at others in order to feel better about themselves.

My night in the Asylum

A while ago, a group of around 10 people and myself decided to explore the Claremont Abandoned Mental Asylum. We gathered at Josh's house in our exploration gear before setting off. Only Josh had a expensive enough camera to be able to take decent pictures in the almost pitch black of the Asylum, but in his flurry to gather protection from crackheads and 'ghosts', he completely forgot to take it with him. Because of this, all we have to show of our visit are a few small phone camera quality pictures, though in their lack of clarity they really help to bring out the eerie atmosphere.

All in all the trip was quite successful, as someone had obviously been there not long before us and left a side window broken wide open. We all clambered in and discussed where to go from there, as no one really felt like taking the first steps down the long black halls.

Whose realm of reality are we in?

I am quite excited to briefly speak about one of a few side projects that me and a few friends are currently working on. The name is still un-disclosed, and its exact nature is still secret, though I will say that it is a space in which three very diverse and very different minds can be explored.

Much time has been spent on aesthetics and user friendliness, as we want people to spend more time within the three realms instead of struggling with navigation, though this does not at all mean that minimal attention has been given to other areas such as the content. All it DOES mean, is that this project will take a fairly long time until its release, and I am estimating around 6 months at the least.

But do not panic! Updates will follow this one, keeping you all informed about progress, as well as screen caps and snippets =)

Until then, I leave you with the image of three lunatics drawing their own maps of their insanity afflicted minds, so you can wish they would hurry up and hand you a copy :)
